What happens when she crosses that threshold to being barely legal? November 11, 2010 | 11:13 pm

Why does Kuyt look happier than Nando?

Taken from an ad I saw from the recent Wolverine #2.  Is this integrated marketing gone mad?

The logic of an 8-year old will set you free. November 1, 2010 | 02:34 pm

I was having lunch with my father yesterday — we don’t really eat together that often anymore, so it was something of a treat.  Though, to be fair, it’s always something of a treat if your father pays for your fancy Chinese lunches by default.

I digress.

We were talking about things I was saying when I was a wee lad.  Apparently, when I was 8, I had told my dad that I wanted to remain a boy forever — because I didn’t want to grow up and die.  I naturally feel the same way now, but in hindsight, I must’ve been one hell of an optimist back then.  Or a fatalist, depending on how you’re looking at all this.

Oh well.

I really fear death!  It’s uncool (death, not the fear of it).

Can you spare a man a dime?

The longest October ever. October 27, 2010 | 06:24 pm

It’s been a massive month of munching.  It’s also been a massive month of Mac-ing.  And a massive month of Melbourne (4 days of it, at least).

Yes, do not fear — I’m still around.

There’ll be more to come!  Soon!

Small pleasures are pleasures, nonetheless. October 2, 2010 | 03:12 pm

There’s no better feeling you can get than the astonishment and pleasure from finding a stash of long-lost pornography that you thought you’d thrown away.

Joy!

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs: a guide

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs was set up in 1962 to promote the “peaceful use of outer space”.

However, it is also responsible for the rather more exciting political ramifications of what to do if aliens land on Earth.

As such, its own leader Prof Mazlan Othman, a Malaysian astrophysicist, is in charge and therefore the one expected to meet and conduct negotiations with the first extraterrestrials that might come to this planet.

UNOOSA’s other duties include passing the benefits of technology developed for space to Earth-bound humanity, particularly those in the Third World; and monitoring what is sent into space.

Its Programme on Space Applications covers developments in “meteorology, communications and natural-resource management” and offers education and advice with the stated aim of narrowing the gap between industrialised and developing countries.

It maintains the Register of Objects Launched into Outer Space and, in May, it issued a warning that the volume of “space junk” orbiting the Earth – including abandoned rockets, shattered satellites and missile shrapnel – was such that a collision was becoming more likely and that it could even set off a chain reaction capable of destroying the communications network on Earth.

According to its website, its committee meets just once a year, most recently between June 9 and 18 this year. It is based in Vienna.

It does not deal with the issue of weapons in space, which is the remit of the Conference on Disarmament.

Jesus and me are tight. September 27, 2010 | 06:54 pm

My mom keeps a small bust of Jesus in front of my graduation photos on her kitchen table — she’s a God-fearing, holier-than-thou lady of leisure.

I believe in something bigger out there — the reason being that the only cause of the wonders and problems around us can be attributed solely to some sort of divinity.

I’m not that holy, but it’s not a bad thing to believe in something every now and then.
